What is Thread Vein Removal?

Embarrassed by visible veins on your face that you can't seem to cover? Those fine red or purple thread veins on your nose, cheeks, and chin can be impossible to conceal with makeup—and frustratingly, they often get more prominent with age. The good news? Laser treatment can remove them permanently, giving you the clear, even-toned skin you've been trying to achieve with concealer.

Thread vein removal is a laser treatment targeting dilated capillaries visible beneath the skin surface. The LUMINA® Nd:YAG laser delivers 1064nm wavelength light absorbed by haemoglobin, heating and collapsing unwanted vessels. Most facial thread veins clear within 1-3 sessions, with treated veins permanently eliminated.

Thread veins (also called spider veins, broken capillaries, or telangiectasia) are small, dilated blood vessels visible just beneath the skin's surface. They appear as fine red, purple, or blue lines, often in clusters or web-like patterns. While they're harmless medically, they can significantly impact how you feel about your appearance.

Understanding Why Thread Veins Develop:

Thread veins develop when the tiny capillaries just under your skin become dilated and visible. This can happen for several reasons:

• Sun damage — Years of UV exposure damages the collagen supporting blood vessels, allowing them to dilate and become visible. This is why thread veins often appear on sun-exposed areas like the nose and cheeks.

• Aging — As skin thins with age, the blood vessels beneath become more visible. The supporting collagen also weakens, making vessels more prone to dilation.

• Rosacea — This chronic skin condition causes facial redness and often leads to thread vein development. If you have rosacea, treating the underlying condition alongside the thread veins gives better long-term results.

• Genetics — Some people are simply predisposed to developing thread veins, regardless of lifestyle factors.

• Lifestyle factors — Alcohol, spicy foods, extreme temperatures, and certain medications can trigger vessel dilation. Repeated dilation can eventually become permanent.

• Hormones — Pregnancy and hormonal changes can contribute to thread vein development.

How Laser Thread Vein Treatment Works:

The LUMINA® laser uses a specific wavelength of light that is absorbed by haemoglobin—the red pigment in blood. When the laser energy is absorbed, it converts to heat, causing the blood in the vessel to coagulate. This damages the vessel wall, causing it to collapse and seal shut.

The laser energy targets haemoglobin in unwanted blood vessels. This haemoglobin absorbs the light and converts it to heat. The heat causes the vessel to collapse and seal, which your body then naturally absorbs over the following weeks.

Over the following weeks, your body's natural healing processes absorb the collapsed vessel, and it simply disappears. The surrounding skin is unaffected because the laser targets haemoglobin specifically—the energy passes through skin tissue without being absorbed.

The LUMINA® Advantage for Thread Veins:

Mode Laser Skin Clinic uses the LUMINA® laser system as it delivers both Advanced IPL (585nm) and Nd:YAG (1064nm). Meaning it can safely and effectively treat the vessels at different depths:

• Deep penetration — The 1064nm wavelength reaches vessels deep in the dermis without damaging the surface

• Advanced IPL (585nm) — Effectively targets red and purple facial vessels, allowing safe, precise, and comfortable treatment of broken capillaries and persistent facial redness.

• Long pulse duration — Heats vessels evenly and completely for better clearance

• Separate cryo-cooling — The Zimmer Cryo Cooler 6 is used alongside the laser to protect your skin and dramatically reduce discomfort during treatment. You feel the cooling before, during, and after each pulse.

• Suitable for all skin types — Unlike some lasers, Nd:YAG is safe for darker skin tones

Treatment Areas:

Facial thread veins commonly appear on:

• Nose — The nose, particularly the sides and tip, is the most common location for thread veins. The skin here is thin and highly vascular.

• Cheeks — Thread veins on the cheeks often appear in clusters, creating areas of redness that look like a permanent flush.

• Chin — Less common but still frequently treated at Mode Laser Skin Clinic.

• Around the nostrils — Small, stubborn veins often develop in this area.

Setting Realistic Expectations:

Most facial thread veins can be significantly reduced or completely removed with 1-3 treatment sessions. However, results depend on the size, depth, and number of vessels being treated. Very fine, superficial veins often clear quickly, while deeper, more established vessels may take longer.

It's important to understand that while treated veins are permanently removed, laser treatment doesn't prevent new thread veins from developing in the future. If you have ongoing triggers like rosacea, sun exposure, or genetic predisposition, new veins may appear over time. Many clients return for occasional maintenance treatments to address new vessels as they develop.

Kathryn's Experience with Thread Vein Treatment:

With over 20 years of experience using the LUMINA® laser system, Kathryn has treated thousands of thread veins across all facial areas and skin types. She understands how to adjust laser parameters for optimal results while minimising any risk, and she'll give you an honest assessment of what can be achieved during your consultation.

Key Benefits

Visibly Clearer Facial Skin

Finally, clear skin without heavy concealer every morning. Laser treatment permanently removes thread veins, giving you the clear, even-toned complexion that makeup alone can't achieve. Clients often describe feeling like they finally have the skin they've been trying to create with concealer for years.

Completely Non-Invasive Treatment

Unlike surgical vein removal or sclerotherapy injections, laser treatment works from outside the skin. There are no needles, no incisions, and no need for anaesthesia. The laser simply passes through your skin to target the vessels beneath.

Quick, Convenient Sessions

Facial thread vein treatments at Mode Laser Skin Clinic typically take just 15-30 minutes, making them easy to fit into a busy schedule. Many clients pop in during a lunch break and return to work immediately afterwards.

Minimal to No Downtime

You can return to normal activities immediately after treatment. Some temporary redness is normal but usually fades within a few hours. Most clients can apply makeup the next day and have no visible signs of treatment.

Permanent Removal of Treated Veins

Once a thread vein has been treated and your body has absorbed it, that specific vessel is gone permanently. Without expensive makeup that still doesn't fully cover the veins, you can enjoy naturally clear skin. While new veins may develop over time (especially with sun exposure), treated ones are removed for good.

Freedom from Heavy Makeup Coverage

Many clients spend significant time and money on concealer trying to hide thread veins that remain visible anyway. After treatment at Mode Laser Skin Clinic, you can simplify your makeup routine and feel confident with minimal or no coverage.
