Thread vein removal is a laser treatment targeting dilated capillaries visible beneath the skin surface. The LUMINA® Nd:YAG laser delivers 1064nm wavelength light absorbed by haemoglobin, heating and collapsing unwanted vessels. Most facial thread veins clear within 1-3 sessions, with treated veins permanently eliminated.

Thread veins (also called spider veins, broken capillaries, or telangiectasia) are small, dilated blood vessels visible just beneath the skin's surface. They appear as fine red, purple, or blue lines, often in clusters or web-like patterns. While they're harmless medically, they can significantly impact how you feel about your appearance.

Understanding Why Thread Veins Develop:

Thread veins develop when the tiny capillaries just under your skin become dilated and visible. This can happen for several reasons:

• Sun damage — Years of UV exposure damages the collagen supporting blood vessels, allowing them to dilate and become visible. This is why thread veins often appear on sun-exposed areas like the nose and cheeks.

• Aging — As skin thins with age, the blood vessels beneath become more visible. The supporting collagen also weakens, making vessels more prone to dilation.

• Rosacea — This chronic skin condition causes facial redness and often leads to thread vein development. If you have rosacea, treating the underlying condition alongside the thread veins gives better long-term results.

• Genetics — Some people are simply predisposed to developing thread veins, regardless of lifestyle factors.

• Lifestyle factors — Alcohol, spicy foods, extreme temperatures, and certain medications can trigger vessel dilation. Repeated dilation can eventually become permanent.

• Hormones — Pregnancy and hormonal changes can contribute to thread vein development.

How Laser Thread Vein Treatment Works:

The LUMINA® laser uses a specific wavelength of light that is absorbed by haemoglobin—the red pigment in blood. When the laser energy is absorbed, it converts to heat, causing the blood in the vessel to coagulate. This damages the vessel wall, causing it to collapse and seal shut.

The laser energy targets haemoglobin in unwanted blood vessels. This haemoglobin absorbs the light and converts it to heat. The heat causes the vessel to collapse and seal, which your body then naturally absorbs over the following weeks.

Over the following weeks, your body's natural healing processes absorb the collapsed vessel, and it simply disappears. The surrounding skin is unaffected because the laser targets haemoglobin specifically—the energy passes through skin tissue without being absorbed.

Facial thread veins commonly appear on:

• Nose — The nose, particularly the sides and tip, is the most common location for thread veins. The skin here is thin and highly vascular.

Setting Realistic Expectations:

Most facial thread veins can be significantly reduced or completely removed with 1-3 treatment sessions. However, results depend on the size, depth, and number of vessels being treated. Very fine, superficial veins often clear quickly, while deeper, more established vessels may take longer.

It's important to understand that while treated veins are permanently removed, laser treatment doesn't prevent new thread veins from developing in the future. If you have ongoing triggers like rosacea, sun exposure, or genetic predisposition, new veins may appear over time.
