HOW DOES IT WORK?

Acne is a common skin condition that frequently affects teenagers and young adults of both sexes. However, adults of all ages from mid twenties through to mid fifties are increasingly affected and troubled by congested skin, blocked pores, and skin blemishes. You don’t have to let acne spoil your life. An effective acne combination therapy may include one or all of the following clinically proven treatments:

A specifically formulated Skin Peel that contains a combination of glycolic, salicylic and lactic acid to reduce sebum production and dead skin cell build up whilst calming inflammation.

Microdermabrasion gently exfoliates the skin, clearing any debris, unclogging the pores and smoothing away areas of acne.

We also offer an IPL Acne Treatment that can be more suited to some clients.

CAUSES OF ACNE

HORMONES

People who suffer with acne find that outbreaks usually begin at puberty because the body begins to produce hormones called androgens. These hormones cause the sebaceous glands to enlarged, but for acne sufferers these glands become over stimulated. Its often Androgens are also responsible for acne flare-ups associated with the menstrual cycle and, on occasion, pregnancy.

OILY SKIN

When the sebaceous gland is stimulated by hormones, it produces extra sebum (oil). Sebum mixes with common skin bacteria and dead skin cells. While this process is normal, the presence of extra oil in the follicle increases the chances of clogging and can cause acne. Stress levels can also affect sebum production and therefore increase the severity of acne.

BACTERIA

The bacterium Propionibacterium acnes, (P. acnes for short) is present on all skins and is part of the skin’s natural sebum maintenance system. Once a follicle is plugged or blocked, P. acnes bacteria multiply rapidly, creating the spots which is the chemical reaction we recognise as inflammation in the follicle and surrounding skin.

INFLAMMATION

When you are exposed to unwanted bacteria your immune system sends in an army of white blood cells to attack. This is why pimples can be red, swollen and painful. The inflammatory response is different for everyone. There are many kinds of acne treatments available. Like you, acne is highly individual, and response to treatments does vary from person to person. Often several treatments are recommended, and particular attention to home-care products in combination with these treatments are needed to break the acne cycle.

WHAT IS THE PRE-TREATMENT ADVICE?

A free, full consultation is carried out prior to treatment to ascertain your suitability and grade of acne and an individual treatment package will be advised on the various treatment options.

WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT FEEL LIKE?

Depending on whether you are advised to have microdermabrasion or skin peels, or a combination of both. This will determine how the treatment feels.

AM I SUITABLE FOR THE TREATMENT?

A patch test with skin peels and the IPL machine if appropriate will be carried out to confirm if you are suitable for the treatment.

WHAT SHALL I EXPECT AFTER THE TREATMENT?

Over the first few days following treatment its not unusual to have a few outbreaks the treatment can speeds up the process of spots erupting but also the healing process.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Occasionally mild swelling can be experienced

In rare circumstances a small blister can form or you can experience a temporary lightening or darkening of the skin. However most people experience little or no side effects, and any reaction disappears within a few hours.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

6-8 sessions are recommended and the sessions are 4 weeks apart.
